Malawi also secured qualification from Group C despite a 2-1 defeat to Zambia, doing enough across their three matches to finish first in the group and join Nigeria in the last eight.
Group D proved equally competitive, with Cameroon and Ghana sharing the points in a 1-1 draw, while Mali and Cape Verde also played out a 1-1 stalemate. Cameroon and Ghana advanced to the quarter-finals to complete the final eight.
