CALABAR —* The convoy of the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), *Peter Obi*, and his running mate, *Rabiu Kwankwaso*, came under attack in Calabar on Wednesday, November 4.

The incident occurred shortly after Obi arrived in the Cross River State capital with his wife, Margaret, for the party’s presidential town hall meeting at Metropolitan Hotel, Calabar.

According to eyewitnesses, the convoy was moving through the metropolis amid cheers from supporters when suspected political thugs ambushed it around the popular *Watt Market area*, hurling stones, bottles and other dangerous objects at the vehicles and supporters.

Some vehicles in the motorcade were damaged. However, neither Obi nor Kwankwaso was injured in the incident.

Men of the Cross River State Police Command, who were on ground, swiftly intervened, dispersing the attackers and restoring order.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, *ASP Sunday Eitokpah*, confirmed the arrest of one suspect.

“NDC supporters under heavy attack in Watt Market. The police have made an arrest to this effect. The suspect name is *Victor Edet Yellow-Duke, male, 27 years*,” the police spokesman said.

He added that investigations have commenced to identify those behind the attack and their sponsors.

The attack came hours after police and other security operatives averted a possible clash between supporters of the ruling APC and the NDC in Calabar.

Obi’s media aide, *Ester Umoh*, had earlier raised the alarm on social media: _“Thugs are trying to attack our convoy.”_

This is the second time in barely two months Obi’s convoy has faced a similar attack — after the Benue incident where thugs blocked Boko Road near the Air Force Base to prevent him from entering the state.
