MTN Nigeria will take its Data on Trial initiative to Katsina on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, as part of its continued efforts to address customer concerns about data depletion and improve understanding of mobile data consumption. The engagement will give students an opportunity to examine common questions about data usage and learn practical ways to manage their bundles.

The Katsina edition will take place at the Federal University Dutsin-Ma, at 3:00 p.m. It builds on previous editions of the initiative, including a public hearing in Lagos in June and campus engagements at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, in August and Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, in October.

The session will be hosted by lawyer and media personality Timi Agbaje and will adopt a courtroom-style format, with students from the Faculties of Law and Engineering serving as the prosecution team and MTN representatives forming the defence team. The format will encourage students to examine common concerns about data consumption and engage directly with the MTN team on the factors that influence their usage.

Discussions will focus on the factors that influence data consumption, including video streaming quality, social media use, background app activity, automatic downloads and smartphone settings. Students will learn how activities such as streaming videos at higher resolutions, autoplaying content and running applications in the background can consume data, sometimes without their immediate awareness. The session will also address concerns about data bundles depleting faster than expected, particularly among students who depend on mobile internet for academic research, online learning, communication and entertainment, and who need to make their data last across these activities.

Students will be introduced to practical tools, including the myMTN App and MTN’s Data Calculator, to help them monitor their bundles, identify applications that consume significant amounts of data and make informed decisions about their internet use. The session will also provide an opportunity to clarify questions about data bundle validity, expiry and rollover, including the conditions that apply to eligible bundles.

For students balancing academic responsibilities with limited budgets, understanding these factors can help them make more informed choices about their data purchases and online activities.

Through the Katsina engagement, MTN aims to equip students with knowledge they can apply to their daily internet use and share with their peers. By taking the discussion into campus communities, the company continues to encourage informed conversations about mobile data, giving customers a clearer understanding of data consumption while providing a platform for their questions and concerns.
