GOtv’s Kid’s Content: Shaping Young Minds Through A Mix of Entertainment and Education During the Holidays
Children are among the most avid television viewers. Research has shown that kids spend more time in front of the television than an adult spends working. Every day, young children watch between three to five hours of television. Some even spend 20 hours of TV time per week and even more during school breaks. Rather than playing outside, reading, or helping out around the house, kids would rather spend their time in front of the television.Given that children are naturally keen observers, television is a powerful tool for learning and development. They absorb information rapidly, mirroring what they see on-screen in their play and daily interactions. Whether it’s a new language from an educational show, fun sing-along music from an animated series, or social skills from watching their favourite characters interact, the influence of television on children is profound. Consistent exposure to television shapes their values, knowledge, and overall outlook on life. However, this influence also carries a challenge. The content that children engage with must be carefully curated to ensure that it promotes healthy developmental traits. GOtv understands the huge impact TV viewing has on the younger ones, which is why they continually invest in kids’ channels and content. From original productions like the interactive and educational “The Siblings Game Show,” a game show that tests the bond and dynamics between siblings. it is also filled with lots of interesting games and activities, that they can recreate on their own. “Indomie Love Bowl Game Show,” a game show that is also filled with lots of interesting Mummy and Me activities, among many other interesting kid’s reality programs that air on Africa Magic Family GOtv channel 4 to popular international channels such as Disney Jr. GOtv channel 92, Cartoon Network GOtv channel 89, Disney Jr GOtv ch 82, Moonbug GOtv channel 85 and Nickelodeon GOtv channel 87, which offers a wealth of kids shows like Henry Danger, Cocomelon, Pokémon Horizons, Transformers, Spongebob Squarepants, and many more that sparks their imagination and fosters learning. With this wide range of age-appropriate programming and the convenience of parental controls, GOtv empowers parents to manage their children’s viewing habits effectively. Beyond the Paycheck: How to Monetize Skills in the Film Industry
Workers in the film and TV industry are part of an exciting sector that allows for creative expression and offers a range of opportunities. However, the business can be volatile and is often characterized by short-term, freelance contracts. Initiatives like the MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) play a crucial role in equipping creatives with the skills needed to thrive, offering training and resources to help professionals turn their passion into sustainable income. Here are eight ways film workers can turn their skills into consistent income and ensure their longevity in the industry:1. Constant LearningWhether you graduate from a university, media college, or industry training institution, your qualification quickly becomes secondary to your actual skill set. It’s essential to keep learning and stay updated with industry trends by taking short courses, attending workshops, and participating in focused masterclasses. MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) offers a variety of masterclasses across Africa, providing access to world-class training designed to keep skills relevant and in demand. MTF also focuses on nurturing emerging talent and equipping them with the knowledge needed to succeed in the industry.2. NetworkingAs a professional, your value is as much about your relationships as your abilities. Build and maintain a strong professional network. Get to know your colleagues and keep in touch even when you’re not working together. Strengthen your online presence by updating your social media profiles, websites, and other platforms with your latest work and projects. MultiChoice Talent Factory also provides networking platforms, helping to connect creatives and opening doors to collaboration opportunities across Africa.3. Side Gigs In today’s industry, not every employer will expect exclusivity. Most film and TV professionals work on multiple projects simultaneously, maintaining relationships with various clients. Keep several lines in the water, actively seeking extra freelance gigs. These can help make ends meet and may lead to bigger opportunities in the future.4. Think Beyond Your Region The flexibility of remote work has erased geographical boundaries, allowing you to pursue opportunities far from your local area. Explore markets in other regions or countries. With favorable exchange rates, your fees may be attractive to international clients. This strategy can broaden your horizons and significantly impact your income potential.5. Transcend Your Sector The skills acquired in film and TV can apply to many other sectors, such as social media, corporate communications, public relations, music, and marketing. Look for opportunities in these booming industries, especially when the traditional TV sector quiets down.6. Share Your Skills Teaching, tutoring, coaching, and training others is a valuable way to monetize your expertise. You can coach aspiring film professionals, sharing insights from your experiences. Coaching or tutoring requires little equipment, and you’ll be surprised at how much aspiring film workers appreciate your insights. Try to create a small course or an e-learning module that you can reuse with different students.7. Personal ProjectsWhile most projects come from TV and film companies, opportunities also exist on a personal level, like creating a documentary about a person or notable event or developing press packages for artists or writers. People passionate about their stories are often willing to invest in having them told well.8. Start a Company Starting your own business can unlock exciting new opportunities. Collaborate with fellow professionals, pitch for projects, and secure financing when needed. Establishing your own company can transform your career path and grant you greater creative freedom. To date, thirty MultiChoice Talent Factory alumni have launched their own production houses, creating employment and making significant contributions to the economy.MultiChoice Talent Factory continues to empower creatives, providing resources to learn, network, and grow their careers beyond just earning a paycheck. Film professionals possess a wide range of adaptable skills, much like a versatile Swiss Army knife. So, get out there, market yourself, and think big!

The Power of Change: How TV Evolution Empowers Everyone
The television sector is at an exciting stage of development. Its evolution has accelerated – particularly over the past decade – and, most importantly, it has empowered all stakeholders. While discussing consumer preferences and expectations, Dr. Busola Tejumola, Executive Head of Content & Channels, West Africa at MultiChoice, explained that today’s audiences are shaping the content they consume. Audiences now actively seek out their preferred content, from music to shows, contributing to the proliferation of platforms available to them.Content DemocracyTraditional media offers tightly scheduled content, but online platforms, streaming services, and over-the-top (OTT) platforms have democratized content, allowing users to curate their viewing experiences based on personal tastes.Over the years, we’ve adjusted or removed content based on data indicating it was no longer resonating with viewers. That is the power of the audience!Broadcasters and production houses must be agile, adapting their offerings in real time to meet the audience’s evolving tastes. In West Africa, Big Brother Naija exemplifies this, using live polls and surveys to gauge sentiment, which then directly influences the storyline.Just as audiences are changing, so are filmmakers. New technologies now give filmmakers a wide array of platforms to share their stories, compared to the limited options of the past, such as pay TV.Today, filmmakers are no longer limited to a single broadcaster; technology is empowering producers to own and distribute their content. When it comes to monetizing content, blockchain technology offers a new way to track and authenticate usage, helping young producers secure the royalties they deserve. This is particularly relevant as AI continues to scrape and reuse online content without consent.Atinuke Ngozi Babatunde, Director of MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) West Africa, emphasized the role of technology and intellectual property in shaping the future of TV: “At MTF, we incorporate courses on law, filmmaking ethics, ethical AI use, and protecting the rights of all film stakeholders. As online spaces evolve, issues like rights, ownership, and piracy are only becoming more critical. Our curriculum constantly adapts to reflect new trends,” she added. “We cover animation, virtual reality, and augmented reality as these technologies become more central to the television industry.”Emerging TrendsA major trend over the past 10 years is the miniaturization and affordability of equipment. Now, a creator can produce high-quality content using just a smartphone. This removes yet another barrier to entry for aspiring filmmakers.A lack of budget or equipment is no longer an excuse – if you have a decent phone, there’s little stopping you from telling your story. MTF’s “Low Budget/No Budget” course equips young filmmakers with frugal innovation skills, which have long been a hallmark of African creativity.Drone technology has also become more affordable, with some students purchasing camera drones as an income stream. Drones add depth to film production and have become mainstream tools for filmmakers.Another significant shift in the last decade is Africa’s emergence on the global film stage. Films are being made in Africa not only by African filmmakers but also by filmmakers from industrialized nations and the African diaspora.Collaboration and skills exchange play a role here. Recently, I participated in an event organized by the U.S. Consulate in Nigeria, where Nigerian filmmakers and musicians explored the importance of building a global African creative community.Storytelling in Our DNAStorytelling is deeply ingrained in African culture, forming the foundation of MTF’s approach to filmmaking. Our courses situate African filmmaking within this rich storytelling tradition. This foundation drives the hyper-local content on channels like Africa Magic, where many of our graduates work, telling authentic African stories for a dedicated audience.Through this technological evolution, all stakeholders in the television sector now have a say in its trajectory. Filmmakers, students, audiences, and broadcasters are all contributing to how content is created and consumed – often in real-time, collaborative settings.Together, we are shaping the future of African filmmaking.
