President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday, October 30, 2026, performed Umrah (lesser Hajj) at the Holy Kaaba in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, offering prayers for Nigeria’s peace, unity and economic prosperity.
Mega Awareness reports that the President departed Abuja on Thursday afternoon, October 29, aboard the presidential Airbus A330-200 from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Nnamdi Azikiwe, en route Jeddah.
According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President was received at King Abdulaziz International Airport, Jeddah, by Nigeria’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Ambassador Yakubu Gambo, Chairman of BUA Group, Alhaji Abdulsamad Rabiu, and top officials of the Saudi Royal Protocol.
Shortly after arrival, President Tinubu proceeded to Makkah to perform the Umrah rites. A video posted on the President’s official X handle @officialABAT on Friday morning showed him circumambulating the Kaaba in white Ihram attire, surrounded by Saudi security officials and aides.
*Presidency Says Trip Is Spiritual Reflection:
The Presidency said the trip is for spiritual reflection, personal supplication and prayers for the nation amid ongoing economic reforms. Tinubu is expected back in Nigeria next week.
The Umrah comes days after the President defended his $21.7bn foreign borrowing plan before the National Assembly, saying the funds will be used to build superhighways — Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, Trans-Sahara — upgrade power grid from 5,000MW to 19,000MW, and modernize ports to achieve a $1 trillion economy by 2030.
Other Presidency Updates Same Day:*
While in Saudi Arabia, the Presidency dismissed reports by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) alleging plans to pressure INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan to shift the January 16, 2027 presidential election. Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, described the report as “fake news,” insisting government has no plan to alter INEC timetable.
Also on Friday, President Tinubu ordered immediate clearance of over 300 containers of electricity equipment stranded at Nigerian ports for 14 to 20 years due to unpaid import charges. Minister of Power, Olasunkanmi Tegbe, said the equipment will be inspected for usability. The Federal Executive Council also approved procurement for East and West Super Grids.
The President also nominated six Executive Directors for the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) on Thursday, including three reappointments.
Social media reactions to the Umrah have been mixed, with many Nigerians wishing the President well, while others urged him to translate prayers into concrete actions to ease hardship.
