YABATECH Inaugurates School of Financial Studies as 1986 Accountancy Alumni Back College Upgrade
Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Yaba, Lagos, has inaugurated a School of Financial Studies, carved out of the School of Management and Business Studies, as the college presses on with its move toward university status.
The new school was inaugurated by the Rector, Dr Engr Ibraheem Adedotun Abdul, with the Deputy Rector, Badmus Ismail, and the Deputy Rector (Administration), Arc. Lawal Adefemi. Delegates of the Yaba College of Technology Accountancy Class of 1986 (YCTACC ’86) were present. The set, which is marking 40 years since graduation, has backed the project as its contribution to the college’s upgrade.

The school opens with four departments: Accountancy, Banking and Finance, Taxation, and Insurance. Accountancy and Banking and Finance had sat inside the School of Management and Business Studies. Taxation and Insurance enter the structure as named departments under the new school, giving the college’s financial programmes a single academic home.
A sign on the facade now reads “School of Financial Studies, Yaba College of Technology, Yaba, Lagos.” Beneath it, an alumni banner titled “The Faces Behind the Legacy” displays the class under the line “YCTACC ’86 · 1986–2026,” with the footer “Together, we made it happen.”
Management presented the unit as part of the regrouping required if YABATECH is to complete its passage from a college of technology to a university. Dr Abdul’s administration has tied new programmes and centres to that transition, and has called for stronger ties with alumni, professional bodies, and industry. The 1986 Accountancy set’s intervention is the latest alumni project in that direction. An earlier Accountancy set, 1985/1990, equipped the department during a visit in 2024.
YCTACC ’86 described the project as a class legacy. The banner’s closing line, “One Class · One Mission · One Enduring Legacy,” framed the school as the set’s mark on the college forty years after graduation.
