ABUJA — In a major boost for Nigeria’s financial sector, the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has granted approval to American banking giant, JPMorgan Chase & Co., to establish a merchant bank in Nigeria.

Mega Awareness reliably gathered that the Approval-in-Principle was granted on Friday, October 30, 2026, allowing the $3.9 trillion US financial institution to move from its current representative office to full merchant banking operations in the country.

A merchant banking license will enable JPMorgan to offer corporate finance, investment advisory, asset management, securities dealing and wholesale banking services to large corporations, multinationals and government agencies.

The development comes at a time President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is pushing for a $1 trillion economy by 2030 and aggressive foreign direct investment drive.

Sources at the CBN told Mega Awareness that the entry of JPMorgan, the largest bank in the United States and one of the biggest in the world, signals renewed global confidence in Nigeria’s economic reforms under CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso.

Financial analysts who spoke with Mega Awareness said the move will have huge implications for the Nigerian market:

JPMorgan Chase already operates in over 100 countries and manages assets worth over $3.9 trillion globally. Its expansion into Nigeria positions Nigeria as a financial hub for West Africa.

The CBN is expected to release full details and conditions of the license in coming days, including commencement date for operations.

This approval follows similar licenses granted to other financial institutions in recent months as Nigeria opens its banking sector to more competition.

Mega Awareness will bring you more details as the story develops.
