Angélique Kidjo Becomes First Black African Honored with Hollywood Walk of Fame Star

LOS ANGELES Beninese singer-songwriter Angélique Kidjo made history as the first Black African artist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame during a ceremony at 7011 Hollywood Boulevard.

The star, the 2,854th in the Recording category, recognizes Kidjo’s four-decade career fusing West African rhythms with global sounds. She attended the unveiling in a vibrant orange-red outfit, blue headwrap, and gold shoes.

Growing emotional during her remarks, Kidjo highlighted Africa’s foundational influence on music worldwide, declaring: “Without us, there’s no music possible on this planet.”Actor Willem Dafoe and Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. spoke at the event, praising her enduring artistic contributions and cultural impact.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce also noted Kidjo’s role in opening doors for African artists on the global stage.The honor marks a significant milestone for African representation in one of entertainment’s most iconic landmarks.
