A Coalition of civil society groups has expressed grave concern ove threats to the life of the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the March 18, 2023 governorship election in Ogun State, Hon. (Dr) Oladipupo Adebutu. The group is demanding urgent intervention from the Inspector General of Police and other security agencies to restore Adebutu’s security details and reassure him and his supporters of their safety within and outside Ogun State.

The coalition condemned the reduction in security personnel attached to Adebutu and the withdrawal of his DSS security aides, noting that this puts him and his family in danger. Given the tense political atmosphere in Ogun State and the ongoing dispute over the results of the governorship election, the civil society groups warn that any harm that befalls Adebutu or his supporters could plunge the state into further uncertainty.

The coalition emphasized the need for security agencies to investigate the alleged threats against Adebutu and restore his security details without delay. They called on the IGP and Director General of DSS to engage in meaningful discussions with Adebutu to address his security concerns.

The Director of Communications for the coalition, Richard Okere, urged the relevant authorities to take decisive action to protect Adebutu and his supporters. “We warn that nothing untoward should happen to Mr. Adebutu and any of his lieutenants or supporters so as not to plunge Ogun State into an enclave of needless fears and uncertainty,” he said.
