Several hours after fire incident at the oil bunkering site in Rumuekpe Community in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State in South-South Nigeria, the number of those affected is yet to be ascertained.

Rumuekpe is a major oil-producing community in the Niger Delta region and the activities of illegal oil bunkers have continued despite efforts by those in authority to put a stop to the illegal business.

Friday’s early morning fire incident at one of the illegal bunkering sites left several persons burnt beyond recognition, while three others were rescued.

Chairman of the Local Government Council, Chidi Lloyd who visited the scene of the incident, blamed security agencies for the proliferation of the illicit trade.

He said illegal refining activities will continue to rise in the Niger Delta region unless the Federal Government stood up to its responsibility by stopping the economic sabotage and protecting the environment.
